Rest in Peace

Every week I tell at lest one of my patients to go and have a chat with a dead relative. I know, that does sound odd. I also know, it helps people say and do the things they need to do in order to forgive others and themselves (AKA heal.) Families are often the source of (some of) our own messed-up-ness. Many postpone dealing with this baggage thinking it can wait for just the right time. There is no right time except for now. This also works with living people you’ve been avoiding, and not talking with for too long. If you want a head start on this process, start by getting out everyone’s photos and displaying them up in your home in a place that is visible to all visitors. Announce your network to the world (this is traditionally thought of as a Family Altar in feng shui.) Let it heal. Each of us is literally connected to our families. Ignore the connection at your own peril. This weekend I’m going to both of my family plots to do maintenance and to catch up on things, and say things I need to say.

Grief Study

A Canadian researcher at the University of Maryland wants to determine how to best help people who have lost a loved one. She is testing a writing intervention for people who consider themselves to be spiritual or religious. The study is conducted on-line in English only. You may be eligible to participate if you’ve lost a loved one within the last 5 years and are currently feeling distress about it, and religion or spirituality matter to you at least somewhat. You will be asked to complete several questionnaires and be assigned a writing exercise to complete three times for 20 minutes over one week. If you are interested in participating, contact Dr. Michelle Pearce at mpearce@som.maryland.edu

Natural Therapy

beach

If people really took this to heart it could put me right out of business.

Let me explain…

I have a patient who came to me with a terminal western diagnosis. Four months later and weekly treatments, she is in remission according to her specialist. She did great work and I got to help.

Now to reduce her costs, I’m going to let nature start healing her for 50% of our regularly scheduled treatments. Instead of having her  come to clinic weekly, every other week I’m going to send her to the beach or a trail in the woods.

Her instructions? Leave your cell phone in the car. Walk for a while. Stop. Step off the trail. Explore and discover like a child. Get reacquainted with the natural world. Marvel at little things. Listen. Smell. Taste! And feel. Feel it all.

Research is growing that affirms this is what so many of us need. T-cell counts increase when you spend regular time in the woods.

I am excited for her. Aren’t you?
